My unexpected journey to Italy...
Problem: I have an issue in my left eye that could lead to a possible retinal detachment. I called my surgeon in Italy and, the most obvious solution (according to him) is to go to the emergency room in York and be examined because the situation is serious and needs to be monitored. [note to the reader: when he said that, I laughed].
Solution 1a: I went to the Emergency room, during the triage the nurse asked me all the usual questions, I did NOT speak and I did not see an optometrist but the nurse, on the phone, explained my problem to the doctor. No one visited me and they sent me home with a phone number (Community Eye Centre). The CEC told me to call back the next day, in the morning, and that they would give me an appointment according to availability by Friday. I then moved on to solution 1b -->
Solution 1b: I run to Spectsaver (for those who don't live in the UK, it's an optician), where I know they have an optometrist on site. The optometrist wasn't there and the receptionist, after calling him on the phone, told me that the situation was serious (thank you for reassuring me, by the way) and to go to the hospital [I laughed again, but nervously]. The optometrist on the phone gave me a phone number (Hospital Front Desk). I moved to solution 1c -->
Solution 1c: I called the Front Desk who told me that the in situ eye doctor has finished his visits but that, in any case, I need a referral to see him. I told him that the Emergency Room sent me away without a referral and, the woman on the phone, told me to go back there (or to see my GP - here again I laughed hysterically in my head -) to get the referral and to call back tomorrow to see if the in situ doctor is available (but I need a referral first). I moved to solution 1d -->
Solution 1d: I call a private optometrist who, in defiance of the Hippocratic oath, tells me that they don't treat emergencies but for £281 (first visit) he can see me exceptionally on 3 October. For an additional £182 he also gives me a complete retinal examination.
In the end, I called my surgeon in Italy who, bewildered because he could not believe that no one would examine a person with a risk of retinal detachment, told me that he could see me the next day, at any time.
Soooo.... I booked a flight in Newcastle --> Milan at 7h45am and Milan --> Stansted at 22h20.
I had my visit**, ate a lovely ice cream, walked almost 18000 steps and slept like a log when I reached home at 4am this morning.
** I had the pleasure to say to my optometrist "I told you so!"

Il mio viaggio inaspettato in Italia...
Problema: ho un problema all'occhio sinistro che potrebbe portare ad un possibile distacco della retina. Ho chiamato il mio chirurgo in Italia e, la soluzione più ovvia (secondo lui) è andare al pronto soccorso di York ed essere esaminato perché la situazione è grave e va monitorata. [nota al lettore: quando lo ha detto, ho riso].
Soluzione 1a: sono andato al Pronto Soccorso, durante il triage l'infermiera mi ha fatto tutte le solite domande, NON ho parlato e non ho visto un optometrista ma l'infermiera, al telefono, ha spiegato il mio problema al medico. Nessuno è venuto a trovarmi e mi hanno mandato a casa con un numero di telefono (Community Eye Centre). La CEI mi ha detto di richiamare il giorno dopo, in mattinata, e che mi avrebbero dato appuntamento in base alle disponibilità entro venerdì. Sono poi passato alla soluzione 1b -->
Soluzione 1b: corro da Spectsaver (per chi non vive nel Regno Unito, è un ottico), dove so che hanno un optometrista sul posto. L'optometrista non c'era e la receptionist, dopo averlo chiamato al telefono, mi ha detto che la situazione era grave (grazie per avermi rassicurato, comunque) e di andare in ospedale [ho riso di nuovo, ma nervosamente]. L'optometrista al telefono mi ha dato un numero di telefono (Front Desk dell'ospedale).

Sono passato alla soluzione 1c -->
Soluzione 1c: ho chiamato la reception che mi ha detto che l'oculista in situ ha terminato le visite ma che, in ogni caso, ho bisogno di un referto per vederlo. Gli ho detto che il Pronto Soccorso mi ha mandato via senza referto e, la donna al telefono, mi ha detto di tornarci (o di vedere il mio medico di base - qui ho riso istericamente in testa -) per avere il rinvio e richiamare domani al vedere se il medico in situ è disponibile (ma prima ho bisogno di un referto). Sono passato alla soluzione 1d -->
Soluzione 1d: chiamo un optometrista privato che, sfidando il giuramento di Ippocrate, mi dice che non curano le emergenze ma per 281 sterline (prima visita) può vedermi eccezionalmente il 3 ottobre. Per altre 182 sterline mi fa anche un esame completo della retina.
Alla fine, ho chiamato il mio chirurgo in Italia che, sconcertato perché non poteva credere che nessuno avrebbe esaminato una persona con rischio di distacco della retina, mi ha detto che poteva vedermi il giorno dopo, in qualsiasi momento.
Così.... Ho prenotato un volo a Newcastle --> Milano alle 7h45 e Milano --> Stansted alle 22h20.
Ho avuto la mia visita**, ho mangiato un bel gelato, ho percorso quasi 18000 passi e ho dormito come un tronco quando sono arrivato a casa alle 4 di stamattina.
**Ho avuto il piacere di dire al mio optometrista "Te l'avevo detto! "
